Microsoft Bing and Yahoo Merger

Unless you are living under a rock in the Internet marketing world, you have probably heard rumors about a Microsoft Bing and Yahoo merger.  The current status is that the deal has already transpired and Yahoo’s organic search transition begins this week!  What this means to you is that the Yahoo organic search results will now be powered by Microsoft Bing.

  • Yahoo and Microsoft with merge their pay per click campaigns.  Current Yahoo search marketing advertisers will be able to import Yahoo campaigns into Microsoft, if you are not already marketing in the Microsoft platform. This has already started with a number of accounts. The full switch to the Microsoft platform is expected to occur by the end of the year.
  • The combined market share realized by the Yahoo and Microsoft merger is pushing 30 points. That is quite a bit of traffic! Our advice, though, is to still let the conversions guide you as to whether or not you should activate or keep a Microsoft pay per click (PPC) campaign.
  • Microsoft will enable people to search through Facebook using Bing. This means that varied content will be fully searchable (photos, videos, etc.)

Bing has already become the second most popular search engine, possibly bringing a bit of competition to the table for Google. It also may be in everyone’s best interest to test out a Microsoft PPC campaign to see what kind of conversions using Microsoft brings.

Time will be that factor that truly tells what the full implications of the Bing/Yahoo merger will bring.
